Food and Wine Season Begins with the Summer Solstice

Summer has arrived, and after what was a peculiar and treacherous winter for most of us in the U.S., it is time to rejoice in all of summer’s bounties.

Summer food & wine festivals are aplenty with the annual summer opener Food & Wine Classic in Aspen wrapped up, Sud de France and Summer of Riesling in full swing, and tickets on sale for the Chicago Gourmet and New York City Wine & Food Festival.  This is just a sampling of the many fantastic festivals around the country.

For many the home garden and farmers markets are starting to put out some wonderful produce, and it’s time to start putting those gems to use.  Pesto is a fabulous way to use basil, arugula, and flat leaf parsley.  I am partial to my recipe and I use it as a topping on my grilled corn, ricotta ravioli, or simply drizzled over fresh mozzarella.

Summer tends to sway my choices for wine, especially in the sweltering heat of July and August.  There are so many fantastic websites, mobile apps, and wine shops for pairing suggestions, a few to look to: Jesse Becker, Christy Frank (Frankly Wines), Jordan Salcito, Corkbuzz (Laura Maniec), NY Wine Salon, and Jameson Fink (Esquin Wine Merchants).

Enjoy the summer and make the best of your bounties!
